Growing Leafy Greens in Small Spaces

Leafy greens are ideal candidates for small spaces because they have shallow root systems and a swift growing season. They can be grown in pots, planters, pallet gardens, hanging baskets, or vertical wall gardens. Common leafy greens like spinach, kale, lettuce, chard, and collards are some of the easiest to grow in small spaces.

One of the notable aspects of these greens is their adaptability. With a bit of planning, you can stage the crops so you can continuously harvest them throughout the seasons. Greens like lettuces and spinach are cool-season crops and prefer temperatures between 45°F and 75°F. In contrast, Swiss chard and mustard greens are a bit more heat tolerant.

Watering and Care

Probably the essential part of growing leafy greens in containers is watering. The objective is to keep the soil evenly moist. Overwatering can lead to root rot and other problems, while underwatering can result in bitter tasting leaves and bolting. A rule of thumb is to water when the top inch of the soil feels dry to touch.

Regular harvesting encourages new growth. If you’re growing a cut-and-come-again variety, harvest outer leaves first, letting the center leaves continue to grow. This will provide you with a constant supply.

Dealing with Pests and Diseases

Leafy greens may be bothered by aphids, slugs, and caterpillars. Regular inspections can catch these pests early before they cause significant damage. Wash off aphids with a strong jet of water or use insecticidal soap. Handpick and dispose of slugs and caterpillars.

Probably the biggest disease threat to leafy greens is mildew, a fungal disease that results in white, powdery patches on leaves. Choosing resistant varieties and ensuring good airflow around the plants can help prevent this disease.
